Florida has fewer left-leaning cities than it did five years ago, and the list keeps shrinking. Republicans now lead voter registration in 58 of the state's 67 counties. Here is where the exceptions are, and what is changing.

Whether you are looking for a liberal city in Florida or looking to avoid one, the useful thing to know is that the map has moved fast. Counties that anchored Democratic politics in Florida for decades have flipped Republican within the last two years, including two of the state's largest.
Florida cities that still lean left
Gainesville
Alachua County. The most reliably Democratic city in Florida, anchored by the University of Florida. Young, academic, and consistently left of the state by a wide margin.
Tallahassee
Leon County. State capital and home to Florida State and Florida A&M. Government and university employment keep it solidly Democratic.
Orlando
Orange County. The urban core votes Democratic, though the surrounding suburbs in Seminole, Lake, and Osceola counties are far more mixed and trending Republican.
Fort Lauderdale
Broward County. Still the strongest Democratic county in the state by registration, though its margin has narrowed substantially since 2020.
West Palm Beach
Palm Beach County. Historically a Democratic stronghold. The county's registration advantage has fallen from roughly 138,000 to under 10,000, one of the sharpest shifts in Florida.
St. Petersburg
Pinellas County. The city proper leans Democratic while the county overall has become competitive and now leans Republican.
Key West
Monroe County. Culturally the most liberal small city in Florida, though the county itself is closely divided.
Miami Beach
Miami-Dade County. The city retains a left-leaning character even as the surrounding county flipped to a Republican registration majority in 2026.
Florida's blue counties are getting less blue
The pattern is consistent statewide and it has accelerated. Hillsborough County, home to Tampa and the state's third largest, flipped to a Republican registration majority in 2025. Miami-Dade, the largest county in Florida and a Democratic anchor for a generation, flipped in May 2026. Palm Beach County's Democratic advantage has collapsed from about 138,000 voters to under 10,000.
Statewide, Republicans have expanded their registration share in all 67 counties since the 2022 midterms. That does not mean every city votes Republican. It does mean that a list of Florida's liberal cities written three years ago would be meaningfully wrong today.
City and county are not the same thing
Several of the cities above sit inside counties that lean Republican overall, and the reverse is also true in places. If political culture matters to your decision, look at the municipality and even the precinct rather than relying on a county label.

What is the most liberal city in Florida?
