For most of the twentieth century Arkansas was solidly Democratic, the home state of Bill Clinton. That era is over. Over the past two decades the state has swung hard to the right, and today Republicans win it in landslides. The election results tell the clearest version of the story.
A two-decade flip
Arkansas last backed a Democrat for president in 1996, when Bill Clinton carried his home state. Since then it has moved steadily right. In 2024 Donald Trump won it by about 30 points, taking roughly 64 percent of the vote.
The shift runs down the entire ballot. Republicans hold the governor's office, both U.S. Senate seats, every statewide office, and supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature. Democratic strength is now limited mostly to Little Rock and the Fayetteville area.
The pattern is consistent across Arkansas's 75 counties. Republicans carry nearly all of them, with Democratic support concentrated in Pulaski County around Little Rock and Washington County around Fayetteville.

Republican priorities move through Little Rock with little resistance, and the state has cut its income tax repeatedly.
Practically, this means Republican policy priorities move through the legislature with little friction. If you are evaluating Arkansas on the basis of policy direction rather than any single election, that unified control matters more than any one result.
What a statewide label does not tell you
Arkansas is not uniformly conservative
Little Rock and the Fayetteville area, home to the University of Arkansas, lean Democratic, along with a few Delta counties. If you are moving to be near like-minded neighbors, the county and the community matter far more than the statewide label.
2026 is an active election year
Arkansas holds a governor's race, U.S. House races, and legislative elections in November. In a state this red, the real contests usually happen in Republican primaries, so the statewide lean tells you more about direction than any single result.
