Utah has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968, one of the longest such streaks in the nation. In 2024 Donald Trump carried the state by about 22 points, taking roughly 59 percent of the vote.
The dominance runs down the entire ballot. Republicans hold the governor's office, both U.S. Senate seats, every statewide office, and supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature. Democratic strength is concentrated almost entirely in Salt Lake City.
The pattern is consistent across Utah's 29 counties. Republicans carry nearly all of them in most cycles, with Democratic support limited to Salt Lake County and a couple of resort communities like Park City.

2012
Mitt Romney, a favorite son, won Utah by nearly 48 points, the state's largest modern margin.
2016
Trump carried Utah with a plurality as independent Evan McMullin drew 21 percent, a rare Republican dip.
2020
Trump won by about 20 points as the state returned to its usual form.

Unified Republican control
Republicans hold the governor's office under Spencer Cox, both U.S. Senate seats, every statewide elected office, supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature, and Utah's entire congressional delegation. Republican priorities move through the Capitol with little resistance, and repeated tax cuts have steadily lowered the state's flat income tax.
Practically, this means Republican policy priorities move through the legislature with little friction. If you are evaluating Utah on the basis of policy direction rather than any single election, that unified control matters more than any one result.
What a statewide label does not tell you
Utah is not uniformly conservative
Salt Lake City leans Democratic, and a few resort and college towns like Park City sit left of the state as a whole. If you are moving to be near like-minded neighbors, the county and the community matter far more than the statewide label.
2026 is an active election year
Utah holds U.S. House races and state legislative elections in November. In a state this red, the competitive contests usually happen in Republican primaries rather than general elections, so the statewide lean tells you more about direction than any single race.
None of this changes the underlying answer. A state can be reliably red and still hold competitive individual races. Plan around the place you are actually moving to, not the label.
